Smart temperature sensors

« Back to Glossary Index

A smart temperature sensor is a complex, intelligent sensor whose scope of performance extends beyond the detection of measured variables to include signal conditioning and signal processing — often combined in a ready-to-install unit. Powerful components of smart temperature sensors are, for example, microprocessors, microcontrollers, complex logic units as well as interfaces for data exchange with higher-level systems (fieldbus systems, sensor networks, IO-Link, etc.) Smart temperature sensors do not require external computer power and are considered important components for the miniaturization of assemblies, the decentralization of functions as well as cost reduction or increased flexibility. Technological foundations for the realization of smart temperature sensors come from microsystems technology and nanotechnology, among others.
